NMU Hosts UNITED Conference

Northern Michigan University will host the Uniting Neighbors in the Experience of Diversity (UNITED) Conference Tuesday and Wednesday, March 8-9. UNITED is a conference focused on personal stories and experiences of diversity, as well as opportunities for self-growth and practical workshops to promote diversity on campus. 

MARESA, NMU Address Child Care Shortage

Efforts to improve child care availability and affordability in the region received a major boost this week when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that the MI Tri-Share Child Care pilot program would expand to seven new facilitator hubs across the state, including the Marquette-Alger Educational Regional Service Agency. It was MARESA's partnership with Northern Michigan University—the first local employer to sign up for the program—that helped to secure $300,000 from the state for the hub's pilot year.

Skill + Sisu = Gold Medal

Feb. 15, 2022 —
Former NMU student and Wildcat football player Nick Baumgartner became the oldest snowboarder to win an Olympic medal and the oldest U.S. gold medalist at the Winter Games since 1948. The 40-year old Iron River native partnered with Lindsey Jacobellis to win the mixed-team snowboard cross in the event's Olympic debut in Beijing. He demonstrated resilience and determination in making his first appearance on the podium in four Olympics.
