Peña Next NMU Visiting Writer


Writer JJ Peña, who has a story featured in The Best Microfiction 2020 anthology, will be the next guest writer hosted by Northern Michigan University's Visiting Writers Program. The event takes place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov 10, in the Northern Center Peninsula I room. Admission is free.

Peña will read from his new work. There will also be a book signing of The Best Microfiction 2020 anthology that features story, “the summer heat feels just like love.”

A resident of El Paso, Peña holds a BA in both English and Anthropology and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Texas. His stories have appeared or are forthcoming in Wigleaf's Top 50 (Very) Short Fictions (2020), Washington Square Review, Cincinnati Review, Massachusetts Review, and elsewhere. He is a 2021 Periplus fellow and a recipient of Shenandoah's 2022 Editorial Fellowship.  

Peña was a judge for the Neutrino Short-Short Prize at Passages North, NMU's student-run literary journal. He will be introduced by MFA candidate Esperanza Vargas Macias.

“Graduate students like Esperanza are an integral part of the Visiting Writers Series, introducing writers and welcoming them into our campus literary community,” said Patricia Killelea, director of the Visiting Writers Program.
