NMU Winter Enrollment Increases

Northern Michigan University's 10th day enrollment report for the current winter semester shows the overall headcount is 7,077, a 3% increase over winter 2019.  The university's total population served has increased 19% to 15,683, fueled in large part by 61% growth in users of NMU's Educational Access Network since this same time a year ago.

“The last time we saw a winter traditional headcount over 7,000 was in 2016,” said Jason Nicholas, director of Institutional Research and Analysis. “Student credit hours are also up by 2.2%.”

The total number of undergraduate students is 6,512, an increase of 134 or 2.1% from winter 2019. The total graduate headcount of 565 represents an increase of 72 students, or 14.6%. New first-time grad students are up 24 students (57.1%). Continuing grad students are up by 56 (13.1%). New first-time freshmen and new first-time transfer populations saw single-digit changes of -3 and +7, respectively.

The university's Educational Access Network (EAN), which provides broadband internet service through the university's high-speed LTE network to learners of all ages in a growing number of U.P. locations, has 5,353 subscribers.

Community learning programs offered through NMU Continuing Education and Workforce Development, the NMU Regional Police Academy and a middle college partnership with MARESA also extend the university's impact. Enrollment in those is 3,253, nearly 10% higher than last year.
