Chief Strategist Discusses State Policy Issues

Feb. 8, 2019 —
Mark Burton, Northern Michigan University alumnus and chief strategist for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, will discuss the rural, suburban and urban dynamics of several policy issues addressed in the State of the State during a presentation at NMU. The event begins at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building and will be followed by a reception in the atrium. The public is invited.

TEDxNMU Tickets Available

Tickets are available for Northern Michigan University's "TEDxNMU: Diving Deeper." Twelve speakers will share insights on how they dove headfirst into passions related to their jobs, hobbies or interests, in the hope of inspiring audience members to do the same. The event is scheduled from 1-8 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in Forest Roberts Theatre.

Singer-songwriter Jesse McCartney will perform at Northern Michigan University’s Berry Events Center at 7 p.m. Friday, March 29. Tickets will go on sale at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at NMU EZ ticket outlets and online. Prices are $20 seated and $25 floor for NMU students, and $30 seated and $35 floor for the general public.

NMU Ranks 6th Among Military Friendly Schools

Northern Michigan University ranks 6th among small public schools nationwide that have been designated 2019-20 Military Friendly Schools by Victory Media. It is NMU's second consecutive Top-10 ranking in the category. The Military Friendly Schools designation honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that provide benefits for military and veteran students.

Governor Announces New Cyber Hub at NMU

A new cybersecurity training hub at Northern Michigan University will accelerate talent development for the high-demand cybersecurity industry, creating jobs in the Upper Peninsula and making U.P. residents and businesses less vulnerable to attacks by hackers. Gov. Rick Snyder and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) today announced plans to open the hub as part of the Michigan Cyber Range Network.

NMU Board Ensures Continued Compliance with Sexual Misconduct Laws

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees has directed the administration to ensure compliance with federal and state laws governing sexual misconduct, including the recent Doe vs. Baum ruling. In that University of Michigan case, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled that when a Title IX disciplinary proceeding involves competing narratives that require a credibility determination, both parties have a constitutional right to cross-examine each other and witnesses in the presence of decision-makers.

NMU Offers Friday Shopping Shuttle

Northern Michigan University has launched a new Friday Shopping Shuttle that transports students to major retailers via Marq-Tran and returns them to several drop-off points on campus. The service began the first week of the fall semester, funded with some of the resources that supported the discontinued Wildcat Shuttle that previously operated Monday-Thursday on campus.

NMU Expands Homecoming Activities

Northern Michigan University's 2018 Homecoming celebration will feature a full slate of activities for alumni and community members Sept. 18-22. Special additions this year include a community-wide ice cream social, the unveiling and dedication of a new Wildcat statue on campus, the premiere of a documentary on the 1975 national champion football team and a dedication of The Woods student housing complex. The following events are free, unless otherwise indicated.
