The Northern Michigan University Native American Student Association will host the annual Indigenous Peoples' Day celebration on Monday, Oct. 11. This year's theme is “A Day of Healing and Celebration.” The events are open to the public.
Programming includes morning and evening ceremonies. The morning ceremony will occur at 10 a.m. in the NMU Academic Mall with drum songs, speakers and an unveiling of the new Land Acknowledgement Sign. The evening ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. in 136 Whitman Hall Commons. It includes keynote speaker Rebecca M. Webster of the University of Minnesota-Duluth, a panel discussion and live music.
"Indigenous Peoples' Day is a meaningful holiday that recognizes the past and current state of colonization for Indigenous Peoples," said Bazile Panek, president of the Native American Student Association. "It celebrates the fortitude and resilience of Indigenous Peoples to continue their ways of life."
