Scholarship Honors Memory of Former Northern Student

Barbara (Golenda) Forsberg

A new college scholarship that honors the memory of former Northern student Barbara (Golenda) Forsberg will be available beginning this year from the Alger Regional Community Foundation.

The Munising native graduated from Mather High School in 1949. Seniors at Munising, Superior Central and Burt Township Schools planning to pursue a degree in the arts, education or music are encouraged to apply.

According to a Mining Journal story on the scholarship, Forsberg began high school by being appointed treasurer of the Mather freshmen class. She went on to participate in the Mather High School Chorus, Library and Science Clubs, Girls' Athletic Association and her senior play.

In later years, she was active in Marquette arts and crafts circles, as well as the Yarnwinders Fiber Guild. Forsberg was a knitter and weaver, and enjoyed sharing her knowledge of fiber arts with others. She worked for several years at Marquette's Michigan Fair gift shop, where her talents were used to create store displays. She was also employed as a floral designer.
