Northern Michigan University alumnus Joe Tinti has been named Athletic Director of the Year by the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association for Region 1. Tinti is the athletic director and principal at Norway High School. He was presented with the award on March 16 at the annual MIAAA Mid-Winter Conference in Traverse City.

Tinti has two degrees from NMU: a 2004 bachelor's in social studies and secondary education; and a 2008 master of arts in educational administration and supervision

In an Iron Mountain Daily News article, Tinti said, “It's an honor to be recognized for my consistent dedication to our athletes and students. Athletics is one aspect of school and it plays a big role in their lives; it's important to show them our support.”

He added that his greatest success is the relationships he has built with students and student athletes.
