Food 4 Fines Returns to NMU

Food 4 Fines

Northern Michigan University will embark on its third “Food 4 Fines” donation event, in which students who help those in need by contributing items to the NMU Food Pantry can alleviate their parking fines.

Donations will be accepted Nov. 11-15 and Tuesday, Dec. 3 (NMU Day of Giving) at NMU Parking Services in the Services Building. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Typically, about 1,000 pounds of food are collected and $3,000-$3,500 in fines are forgiven.

“Students are excited to participate in this event. A lot of students, faculty and staff donate items without having any parking fines. We get a lot of support from them,” said Parking Services Coordinator Patti Rizzio.

Depending on the value of acceptable donations—there are four tiers ranging from $5-$25—parking citations may be reduced or excused by the respective amount. The value of items will be determined at drop-off.

Those who donate will also be eligible for two prize drawings: a free parking permit, or reimbursement for one already purchased; and a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card.

For more information, contact Rizzio at 227-2151 or email at prizzio@nmu.edu.
