Northern Michigan University will host Fresh Voices from the U.P., a new summer camp for all ages in which participants will adventure along the trails and Lake Superior shoreline and engage in workshops for all skill levels that promote storytelling through writing and music. They will also learn about the Upper Peninsula, the ancestral homelands of the Anishinaabe Three Fires Confederacy. Fresh Voices from the U.P. will be held Monday, July 15 through Thursday, July 18, leading up to the 44th annual Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival in Marquette.

Monday:
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration
4-6 p.m. “Anishinaabe Ways of Knowing the Forest”
7-8:30 p.m. Opening Performance: Reading, Music, Film
Tuesday:
10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Canoe and Kayak Water Adventure with Enviro Experts, or Percussion Workshop
1-2:30 p.m. Ukelele Workshop Day 1, or Walking the Trails: Songs and Writing as Activism Day 1
3-5 p.m. Songwriting and Poetry Workshop Day 1, “What Comes After Wonder? Nature as Muse,” or Walking Tour of Marquette
5-6 p.m. Bring a picnic dinner to the beach or dine on own
7-8:30 p.m. Bonfire and singing
Wednesday:
10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Walking the Trails: Songs and Writing as Activism Day 2, or Collaboration in Music, Writing and Film
1-2:30 p.m. Songwriting and Poetry Workshop Day 2, “What Comes After Wonder? Nature as Muse,” or Fiddle Workshop (intermediate level)
3-5 p.m. Guitar Workshop Day 2: Beyond Standard Tuning
7-9 p.m. Film Screening
Thursday:
10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Songs and Writing as Activism Day 3, or Performance Workshop
12:30 p.m. Boxed lunch and roundtable discussions of mushrooms and animal foraging patterns; and composition with musicians, filmmakers and scientists
2-3:30 p.m. Banjo and bass workshop, or mandolin workshop
5-9 p.m. Performances and open mic
Evening events are free and open to the public. Per-person costs are as follows: two-hour music workshops, $40; three-day music/storytelling workshops, $120; half-day adventures with lunch, $45; and entire conference, all-inclusive, $410 per adult and $40 per child. Dorm housing with continental breakfast is available from Sunday evening through Friday morning for $266 per person single occupancy and $200 double. Children under 17 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
