Northern Michigan University's Administration of Outdoor Recreation and Nature-Based Tourism program is hosting a campus seminar with guest speakers focused on the theme of diversity, equity and inclusion outdoors. Alex Bailey, the originator of "Black Outside," will deliver the keynote address. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, April 19, in Peninsula I in the Northern Center.
Other guest speakers are: NMU 2017 alumna Samantha LaLonde, who became a musher in Alaska (read a Northern Magazine feature story on her here); and NMU English professor Amy Hamilton, who has previously written about diverse experiences in outdoor recreation.
The mission of Bailey's organization is to expand outdoor opportunities to more youth of color. He will share stories of the Black outdoor experience and address the lack of outreach to Black communities on the numerous benefits of spending time in nature.
NMU's Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is partnering on the event. For more information, contact NMU professor Scott Jordan at scjordan@nmu.edu.
