NMU Honors Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Northern Michigan University will honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a week of events celebrating “Diversity Through the Ages.” The week will kick off Monday, Jan. 20, with a campus march for equality.

Participants will assemble at noon in the lobby of Thomas Fine Arts. The march will proceed to the Lodge at The Woods student housing complex for programming including campus diversity updates, demonstrations and a presentation by Poetry Without Borders. Participants are invited to enjoy complimentary pizza, hot chocolate and cake.

The Center for Student Enrichment (CSE) will sponsor the following service projects as well, beginning at 2 p.m. in the Lodge: making toys for dogs at UPAWS; knitting and crocheting hats, scarves and mittens for the Women's Center; and creating thank you cards for residents of the Jacobetti Home for Veterans. Interns from the NMU Food Pantry, as well as members of the Student Leader Fellowship Program, will also be at the Beaumier Welcome Center from 2-3 p.m. training students to volunteer at the NMU Food Pantry.

Shantia Coley, Esquire, will be the featured keynote speaker at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, in Peninsula Room I of the Northern Center. The event is free and open to the public. Coley is a nationally recognized attorney for a Fortune 500 Corporation. As a first-generation college graduate, she is passionate about helping others find their way out of mental shackles and self-imposed doubts and pressures and discover their purpose and power.

The Diversity Common Reader Program will distribute this year's selection, Southside Buddish by Ira Sukrungrvang, to NMU students on Friday, Jan. 24. Free books, pizza and soda will be available from 1-3 p.m. in the Hedgcock atrium outside the Multicultural Education and Resource Center.
