NMU Virtual Powwow March 26

Mar. 21, 2022 —
Northern Michigan University's Native American Student Association (NASA) and the Center for Native American Studies will host "Powwow 102: Learning to Walk Together (While Apart)." The event will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26 on Zoom and on NASA's Facebook Live @nmunasa. This event is free and open to the public, but donations are encouraged. 

Ukraine War Hits 'Close to Home' for Kusek

Northern Michigan University associate professor Weronika Kusek is actively monitoring the situation in Ukraine. Her interest is partly professional because she addresses the topic of refugees in her human and population geography courses. It is also personal, as recent Russian missile strikes hit perilously close to the border of her home country of Poland, where her entire family still resides.

Mann Receives Distinguished Faculty Award

Paul Mann of Northern Michigan University's School of Clinical Sciences is the 2022 recipient of the Stephen Young & Tricia Kinley Distinguished Faculty Award, NMU's top honor for significant professional contributions to teaching, scholarship and service. Mann is associate dean and director of the school in addition to professor. He will be recognized at NMU's April 30 commencement.

Excellence in Teaching Award: Diana Lafferty

Northern Michigan University Biology Assistant Professor Diana Lafferty received the 2021-22 Excellence in Teaching Award at a March 17 Celebration of Excellence on campus. The award recognizes faculty who have outstanding peer and student evaluations, are dedicated and enthusiastic, create safe and open learning environments, and experiment with innovative teaching and learning paradigms.

NMU Foundation Issues RFQ for Former Hospital Site Redevelopment

The Northern Michigan University Foundation has issued an open Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for prospective master developers interested in revitalizing the former hospital property adjacent to the NMU campus. This action was taken following a period of due diligence to assess the feasibility of enabling a significant mixed-use development to proceed.

Horn's Next-Gen Computing Project Funded

Northern Michigan University associate professor Jeffrey Horn has been awarded $92,500 from the Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization (MTRAC) Innovation Hub for Advanced Computing for a next-generation computing project. Horn received the funding for a Deep-Scale Evolution (DSE) algorithm that he invented that has practical implications for minimizing material waste in industrial production. 

Alumnus Named CEO at VAST

Kelly Reed, a 2007 Northern Michigan University business management graduate and former Wildcat quarterback, is the new CEO at VAST in Marquette. He has been with the insurance and risk management firm for 15 years, most recently as a risk adviser for health care providers throughout the United States.

Broadband Expansion Receives Federal Funding

The $1.5 trillion omnibus spending package that passed the U.S. House and Senate and was signed by President Joe Biden last week includes $1.2 million in congressionally directed spending that will enable Northern Michigan University to expand LTE broadband service to rural communities in the Upper Peninsula and northeastern Lower Peninsula through its Educational Access Network (EAN).
