Gov. Gretchen Whitmer today announced nine appointments, including NMU alumnus and former Wildcat basketball player Ryan Reichel, to the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports.

Reichel lives in Negaunee. He teaches physical education, computers and health for Ishpeming Schools, and coaches the girls varsity basketball team. He also served on the selection committee that led to last year's hire of NMU men's coach Matt Majkrzak.

In addition to two bachelor's degrees from NMU, Reichel holds a master's from the University of Arkansas.

The press release states that the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports was established in 1992 to improve the health of, and increase physical activity among, Michigan residents. Reichel's term expires April 30, 2022.
