CTE Careers Highlighted

CTE magazine cover

Marquette and Alger County high school students and their families will receive a special publication detailing Career Technical Education (CTE) opportunities to train for many of the country's most in-demand occupations.

More than one million jobs are currently unfilled in manufacturing, trades, transportation and utilities. Jobs in business, information technology, health care and professional trades make up nearly half of the 50 fastest-growing career fields in Michigan. Many feature hands-on training, high wages and quick degree-to-work options.

The Career Technical Education 2020 Magazine, in its sixth year, is presented in a new, pocket-size format. The publication includes brief descriptions of programs and sample careers, along with wages and job-growth projections. It is published by the 2019 UPEDA Nonprofit Award-winning Marquette Alger CTE Committee and Northern Michigan University, with support from dozens of business and community sponsors.

Copies are being mailed to families and are also available for pickup at the following locations: Marquette and Alger County high schools, Lake Superior Community Partnership in Marquette, Alger County Chamber of Commerce, NMU's Jacobetti Complex, Munising and Grand Marais public libraries and Superior Central School, or by calling 906-227-2720. A digital version and further information is available at nmu.edu/cte.

Area high schools provide specialized programs in professional trade fields, healthcare, business and information technology. This allows students to try out these programs in high school and get a head start on a college degree by taking a class at NMU or by joining the Marquette-Alger Technical Middle College. The Middle College allows juniors and seniors to earn a high school diploma and up to 44 college credits toward an NMU associate degree or a technical certificate at no cost to students or their families.
