Jacob Daar, psychology professor and program director for the Behavior Education, Assessment and Research (BEAR) Center at Northern Michigan University, has been appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to represent state universities on the Michigan Autism Council. The BEAR Center provides critical therapy services to individuals with autism and other behavioral disorders in underrepresented rural areas, and serves as a clinical and research site for students pursuing careers in the field.

Daar's term begins Oct. 1 and runs through Sept. 30, 2024. The Autism Council is charged with overseeing Michigan's Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) State Plan. It will implement, monitor and update the Michigan ASD State Plan, which will provide for comprehensive, lifespan supports to individuals with ASD and their families through access to information and resources, coordination of services, and implementation of evidence-based practices.
