Northern Michigan University education professors Abby Cameron-Standerford, Bethney Bergh and Christi Edge wrote and co-edited an open-source textbook titled “Pausing at the Threshold: Opportunity Through, With, and For Self-Study of Teacher Education Practices.” The book was published by Equity Press.
The trio explores the intricate and complex weavings of teaching and learning through Self-Study of Teaching and Teacher Education Practices (S-STEP). Since 2012, they have been involved in S-STEP, a genre of educational research focused on examining and improving the relationship between teaching and learning in teacher education contexts. The process can provide insights and understandings of practice for transforming teaching and for generating new knowledge.
“Pausing at the Threshold” features 70 chapters that highlight the central role of S-STEP over three sections. The first covers the past, present and future of learning and seeks to understand how people position, reposition, reframe, re-imagine and integrate new learnings.
The second chapter talks about the “how” in learning. It focuses on attending to the tools and processes in studying teaching and professional experiences, and applying both new and enduring ideas of learning in practical ways. The third and final section addresses the “what” of learning and teaching. It seeks to illuminate the creation of “new wonderings and knowings” through the process of self-study research.
Since the textbook is open access, “Pausing at the Threshold” can be read by anyone at no cost through Equity Press's website here.
