Event Explores Miners' Strike, Labor History

Picket Line

The Central U.P. and Northern Michigan University Archives will present an “Evening at the Archives” event on Thursday, Feb. 28. Negaunee High School seniors Chaz Bluse and Lucas Lambertson will give a presentation on the history of the 1946 iron miners' strike. NMU Archivist Marcus Robyns will provide a brief summary of labor history on the Marquette Iron Range from 1900-1946.

On Feb. 8, 1946, nearly 3,000 iron miners on the Marquette Iron Range walked off their jobs. They joined 750,000 steelworkers nationwide in a strike of the steel industry led by the recently formed United Steel Workers of America (USWA). The nationwide strike lasted just nine days, but the strike on the Marquette Iron Range endured for 104 days.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in 126 Harden Hall (formerly the Learning Resources Center). Admission is free and the public is invited.
