Northern Michigan University Professor of Education Christi Edge is a recipient of NMU's 2021-22 Excellence in Scholarship Award.

“Engaging in scholarship that unites teaching with research through making meaning from teaching and learning events has been a dynamic and vital aspect of my work at Northern,” said Edge. “ I am grateful for the opportunity to engage in scholarship that feeds my teaching, curiosity, love for learning, and keeps my commitment to education burning bright.”

Edge is a Scholar for Extended Learning and Community Engagement (ELCE) at NMU. She has developed this research agenda using the methodology from Self-Study of Teacher Education Practices (S-STEP), which has resulted in new cross-disciplinary studies of online teaching practices and opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students and faculty to study teaching practices.

“NMU's commitment to excellence in teaching has provided me with an environment where the scholarship of teaching can flourish,” said Edge. “Both independently and in collaboration with NMU colleagues, K-12 partners, NMU students and teacher educators across the U.S., I have been able to grow a line of inquiry that contributes to multiple discourse communities.”

Edge has recent publications in the flagship journals Studying Teacher Education and American Journal of Distance Education; as well as an invitation to to publish for the second edition of the foundational Handbook of Self-Study of Teaching and Teacher Education Practices.

She has been responsible for chairing the international S-STEP conference, and creating shared understanding of rigor and criteria for online teaching as the inaugural ELCE Scholar at NMU.

In the past five years, Edge has written 28 peer-reviewed publications, presented at 39 peer-reviewed conferences, received 18 grants and has made numerous contributions through invited presentations and professional writings.

Edge joined NMU's faculty in 2011 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016 and Professor in 2021. She was Northern's Excellence in Teaching Award recipient in 2016. She holds a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction: Teaching and Learning, with a specialization in English Education (2011).
