Andy Buckmaster is one of eight individuals who won the 2023 Excellence in Service Award. He is a mechanic for Northern Michigan University's facilities. He exemplifies NMU's core values when servicing a department vehicle, plowing during some of the heaviest snow storms, working on a special project to help either an academic or athletic program, or helping train NMU's workforce.

When the Superior Dome turf was rendered inoperable, Buckmaster assisted, diagnosed and repaired the building maintenance issue. He worked on the turf's hydraulic system to restore the operation and ensure athletes could conduct planned training. He also worked Christmas morning to repair a piece of snow equipment and assisted with campus plotting to ensure sidewalks, parking lots and roads were cleared for students remaining on campus for the holiday break.

Buckmaster helped develop the public safety department's new Mobile Elevating Work Platform (Lift) program. His knowledge and experience with lift mechanics and safety were invaluable in building this program. His efforts not only helped create the program but the result has also reduced the cost of the training and improved the condition of NMU's equipment.

Also, Buckmaster provides snow blower training for staff and students as well as crane training, helping NMU maintain excellent in-house safety programs. His work ethic, determination and dedication to excellence show his commitment to the department and NMU.
