HR Launches Northern STAR Awards

Northern STAR Awards

Northern Michigan University will launch a new employee recognition program at the end of February that allows for more “in the moment” expressions of gratitude from peers and supervisors. The Northern STAR (Simple, Thoughtful Acts of Recognition) Award offers an opportunity to immediately thank and compliment an employee who contributes exemplary work and/or demonstrates a commitment to NMU's core values.

“Every day, colleagues work together on campus and there are instances where some go above and beyond to help others out or to benefit the university,” said Renee Sheen, assistant director of Human Resources. “Right now, the only way to formally recognize employees is through our annual recognition programs, but some people may not wish to wait to complete a nomination form for the annual academic and staff awards.

"The Northern STAR Award allows employees to express gratitude to a colleague today for a job well done. It's also a simpler, less time-consuming process. They just fill out a brief Northern STAR card, take a photo of it or make a copy to send to Human Resources, and hand deliver or mail it to the recipient.”

Sheen said HR will put a copy of the recognition in the employee's personnel file. Honorees will also be recognized in Campus Connect, entered into a quarterly prize drawing and receive a star pin.

Northern STAR cards are available for download to be printed at www.nmu.edu/hr/northernstar. Cards will also be available for pickup at various campus locations, including HR. For more information, visit the website above or contact Sheen at rsheen@nmu.edu.
