Marquette, home to Northern Michigan University, is the 31st-safest college town nationwide and the second safest in the state, according to 2021 rankings released by SafeWise. The company based its listing on college towns that report the lowest violent crimes and property crimes per 1,000 residents.
"We use the most recent FBI statistics, which currently include crime and population data reported for 2019," the SafeWise website states. "This data doesn't capture the complete picture. Still, it's the most consistent and comprehensive crime information available on a national level."
SafeWise ranked 422 cities with populations of 15,000 or more that are home to accredited colleges with four-year degrees. View the list of the 50 Safest College Towns here.
