NMU, Bay Partner to Provide Direct Admission to NMU

Bay De Noc College President Nerita Hughes with Northern Michigan University President Chris Olsen.

Northern Michigan University has announced a new partnership with Bay de Noc Community College, which provides automatic concurrent enrollment at NMU for students accepted into Bay.

“NMU's partnership with Bay College has been strong for many years, and we are excited to strengthen that connection with this new opportunity for Bay students,” said NMU President Chris Olsen. “Providing access to Northern's support services earlier in their academic journeys more easily facilitates their transition to NMU – and to earning a bachelor's or master's degree. It's a well-designed pathway to their next level of credential that we're proud to offer.”

The agreement will provide students support from both institutions to ensure a seamless transition from Bay to NMU. Students enrolled at Bay and officially confirmed in the program will be admitted to NMU with a concurrent non-degree undergraduate student status.

“At Bay College, we believe partnerships like this are about removing barriers and creating clear pathways for students to achieve their educational goals,” said Bay College President Nerita Hughes. “Our direct admission partnership with Northern Michigan University gives students the opportunity to begin their journey at Bay with the confidence of knowing there is a seamless pathway to continue their education at NMU. Most importantly, this partnership demonstrates what is possible when Upper Peninsula institutions work together to put students first, expand access, and strengthen the educational and economic vitality of our region."

Students confirmed in the program will be given the use of NMU facilities and services to include academic advising, an NMU ID card, a MyNMU account, an NMU email address, access to events at NMU student pricing and events covered by the NMU student activity fee, participation or attendance in select NMU student life activities and one free official transcript from Bay sent to NMU.

The program aims to eliminate barriers for transfer students, promote student wellbeing, increase baccalaureate degree attainment, improve academic program articulation, enhance transfer student connections to the NMU community and utilize resources at both institutions efficiently and effectively.

The initial agreement will run for three years, with the option to renew.

“This partnership with Bay College is truly exciting. Bay offers exceptional preparation for students working towards a bachelor's degree and through this direct admit partnership, students can receive supplemental advising support from NMU on day one of their education,” said Kari Garcia, NMU director of Admissions. “These personalized supports and added perks mean Bay College students can immerse themselves in both the Bay College and NMU communities, creating a fully integrated transfer experience.”
