Northern Michigan University will host its third Diwali celebration from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Northern Center Ballrooms. This event, organized by several groups on campus, will feature traditional performances, food and music.
Diwali is a five-day festival celebrated across South Asia, recognizing the triumph of good over evil and light over dark. Many honor the holiday by doing various activities such as lighting oil lamps, eating food, and praying.
This event will include opportunities to experience aspects of Diwali, from enjoying famous dishes to learning about the meaning behind the lights and decorations.
Tickets for the general public and staff are $25; NMU students are $10, while children 12 and under are free.
Leading up to the celebration, various activities will take place, such as a dance workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 11 and a rangoli workshop, with a date for that event to be set soon.
Participants are also able to borrow South Asian clothing to wear to the event by regiistering here.
