High school students interested in attending the Northern Michigan University Theatre & Dance Wildcat Performing Arts Academy's summer musical theater intensive can register through April 15, or possibly later if space is still available. It is scheduled for June 23-30. Two additional summer intensives in dance and theatrical design/production will both be offered July 20-27. All require audition/placement video submissions to apply.
The musical theater intensive will expose students to a diverse breadth of classes that cover musical theater dance styles, choreography, acting, stage movement and voice work, and engage them in local activities throughout the week. Participants will also enjoy a special event with The Second City from Chicago, receiving training in improv techniques. The intensive will conclude with a final performance showcase that friends and family are invited to attend.
The dance intensive is designed for students at the intermediate through advanced levels. Students will receive instruction in ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, contemporary, hip-hop, composition, choreography/repertoire, conditioning, and injury prevention and treatment. The experience will culminate with a guest performance in the third annual North Coast Dance Festival and a final performance showcase. Students will also have the opportunity to engage in unique local activities throughout the week.
During the theatrical design and production intensive, participants will dive into hands-on workshops led by seasoned professionals. They will explore the technical and business sides of theater with classes in stage and production management, technical direction and marketing. Students can ignite their creativity through costume, sound, hair and makeup, lighting, properties and set design, then join fellow campers to bring their visions to life on the stage.
The cost of attendance for each intensive is $1,000, which includes room and board/meals. For more information, look for the Wildcat Performing Arts Academy link at nmu.edu/theatreanddance.
