The parents of Todd Honch – known as “Stix” by many because he was considered an excellent drummer—have endowed a scholarship to memorialize his passion for Northern Michigan University bands and sporting events.
Honch attended NMU and played in the marching, jazz and pep bands. He also spent 31 seasons cheering on NMU athletes in all sports with a nearly perfect attendance record. He passed away in January 2019 and received a posthumous Fan of the Year Award and golden ticket at the inaugural Wildcat Awards ceremony. The award is now named in honor of Honch and co-recipient Lindsay Griffith, longtime friends and NMU “super fans.”
The Todd “Stix” Honch Memorial Scholarship will provide financial support for a student from any class level and major who is a member of the NMU Marching Band.
“Todd lived for music,” stated Dennis and Pat Honch. “We heard from many, many people who saw how much he enjoyed playing; even we didn't realize how many people's lives he had touched. He was so happy playing—in the rain, the snow or any weather, really. We felt this would be a good way to honor his memory. We also encourage anyone who would like to join us in honoring Todd to contribute to the scholarship.”
