Speaker Uses Humor to Address Sexual Behavior

Social sexuality educator and comic storyteller Cindy Pierce will combine humor and research to give Northern Michigan University students advice about navigating hook-up culture as well as the dos and don’ts of engaging in sexual behavior.

Pierce’s performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Sept. 11 in 1100 Jamrich Hall. She uses anecdotal comedy and research to demystify sex, relationships, and the hookup culture. Additionally, she addresses how media and porn culture skew sexual expectations for many young adults in today’s society. Her stories encourage students to look more closely at the role of alcohol and social media in decision-making when it comes to sex as well as the obstacles to developing healthy relationships.

Pierce started visited colleges around the U.S. in 2004 and since then she has visited over 32 campuses to perform solo shows and provide educational programming.

“I create a safe environment where students can ask the most frank questions without feeling ashamed. My aim is provide information and perspective to help people navigate their social and sexual lives,” Pierce states on her website.

Pierce is the author of SEXPLOITATION: Helping Kids Develop Healthy Sexuality in a Porn Driven World as well as Sex, College, and Social Media: A Commonsense Guide to Navigating the Hookup Culture. She has been regarded as one of “14 Remarkable Women of the Arts” in New Hampshire magazine with only three others in the category. The Center for Women and Gender at Dartmouth College named her a ‘Vagina Warrior’ in 2012 for her work fighting for the empowerment of women and reduction of sexual assault on college campuses.
