MARQUETTE, Mich.— The United States Olympic Training Site weightlifting team finished in first place this weekend in the coed division at USA Weightlifting's National University Championships in Pleasanton, Calif.
Leading the way for the women was Destiny Young of Crystal, Minn., who competed in the 45 kg weight class. Young lifted 61 kg in the snatch and 74 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 135 kg, earning her a gold medal for each lift.
Also earning a medal for the women was Jayda Jenkins of Vero Beach, Fla. Jenkins earned a bronze medal for her lift of 88 kg in the clean and jerk.
The top finisher for the men was Nate Lewis, of Arlington, Wash., who competed in the 102 kg weight class. Lewis lifted 145 kg in the snatch and 190 kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 335 kg. The lifts earned him silver in the snatch and gold medals for the clean and jerk and total.
Earning a bronze for both his clean and jerk of 90 kg and his 120 kg total was Devin McGill of New Hope, Minn. McGill lifted 90 kg in the snatch, placing him fourth in that lift.
As a team, the NMU squad finished the weekend first in the coed division with 191 points with Lindenwood University placing second with 176 and Eastern Tennessee State rounding out the top-3 with 142.
Also taking place this weekend was the U25 National Championships. The NMU squad had two athletes participate in that event, both earning medals.
Michaela McIntosh of New Hope, Minn., earned a bronze medal with a lift of 83 kg in the clean and jerk. On the men's side, Lukas Zielke of Baroda, Mich., finished first in the snatch with a lift of 93 kg and second in the clean and jerk with a lift of 123 kg. His 216 kg total earned him a second gold-medal.
