Two NMU students and two alumni successfully completed their quest to circumnavigate Lake Superior by kayak to raise awareness of the importance of clean water and funding for nonprofits that protect the Great Lakes. They departed in May and paddled the final leg of their 1,500-mile journey into Presque Isle beach Aug. 30.

Dr. Shawn Brown ('07 BA) has joined the UP Health System-Marquette Emergency Medicine staff. She earned her NMU bachelor's degree in athletic athletic training with a minor in Emergency Medical Services before attending the University of Michigan Medical School. Brown previously served as a physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine for St. Luke’s Hospital, working clinically in the ED as well as serving as the physician liaison for emergency preparedness and mass casualty planning.

The Northern Climate Network will host a Marquette Climate March from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Marquette Commons. Marquette is among thousands of cities creating awareness for environmental change and participating in the People’s Climate Movement this year.

An award-winning documentary that explores the history of the Finnish-American cooperative movement, with a focus on Settlers Co-op in Bruce Crossing, will be screened at Northern Michigan University. The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU will present Co-operatively Yours at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in 1100 Jamrich Hall. Admission is free.
