Northern Michigan University Alumni John and Mary Henry have been inducted into the Michigan Construction Hall of Fame at Ferris State University. Selection is based on nominees' technical, managerial and leadership achievements within construction and related industries, as well as service to the profession and community.
Originally from Iosco County, John attended community college while working alongside his father for the Iosco County Road Commission for eight years. He then pursued a degree in civil engineering at NMU, where he met his wife, Mary. She was from Taylor, Mich., and pursuing a degree in English education. Both graduated in 1968 with bachelor degrees in their respective fields.
After graduation, John launched John Henry Excavating Inc. while borrowing money to purchase a backhoe, bulldozer and a truck. Early projects included driveways, basements and foundations. As work slowed, John joined National Gypsum Company, gaining experience in dragline equipment, procurement and quarry operations. These skills helped him later expand to Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) work such as utility installation, landfill capping, box culverts and marina work.
Alongside John, Mary kept her hands full managing the company's books after her husband convinced her to leave teaching. She took the time to appreciate and learn the art of construction through various workshops. The couple continued to dedicate their time to their company, eventually growing it into a successful multi-generational business.
Their commemorative plaque reads as follows: “Their son, John Jr., and his wife, Connie, joined the business, continuing the tradition alongside granddaughters Alexis and Alyssa. Building culture where employees become family and a legacy of community service, the Henry's story is one of building not only projects, but generations.”
