SRA Forum Addresses Questions

Oct. 4, 2018 —
An Oct. 3 campus forum on the Strategic Resource Allocation (SRA) project served mainly as an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to ask questions about the process. In his opening statement, President Fritz Erickson addressed confusion related to the five quintiles that programs fall under in the reports completed by the academic and support task forces.

Project Connects Researchers with Public

Oct. 4, 2018 —
Allison Opheim was one of five NMU Honors Program students selected for a Lundin Summer Research Fellowship. Her project was titled “Communicating Scientific Research in a Social Media Age.” The senior public relations major constructed a communication tool kit for sharing research on social media platforms after reviewing existing resources and working with NMU research labs.

Detroit Students Aim North

Oct. 3, 2018 —
Graduating high school seniors in Detroit were able to get a head start on college before leaving their hometown through Aim North, a pilot program offered through Northern Michigan University’s Diversity and Inclusion Office. Students could take two summer courses, earning up to eight credits toward the liberal studies requirements for a degree prior to enrolling at NMU or another institution this fall.

Alumnus Joins Elevate97

Bill Hawker ('95 BS) built a career in professional sports, establishing corporate partnerships for three NFL north division franchises: the Bears, Packers and Lions. Now he has returned to Green Bay as director of business development for Elevate97. The business creates and distributes marketing solutions for world-renowned retail brands. Clients include Carhartt, Calvin Klein, Pandora jewelry, Tommy Hilfiger, TaylorMade Golf and his former employer, the Packers.

NMU Administrative/Professional Union Ratifies Contract

Oct. 2, 2018 —

Northern Michigan University’s UAW 2178 union, which represents administrative/professional employees, has ratified a three-year contract. Of the members who voted on Oct. 1, 80 percent approved the agreement.

The contract is effective Oct. 1, 2018 through Sept. 30, 2021. Terms include across-the-board 2 percent wage increases for each of the three years of the contract. The first year will also include a one-time $500 payment per employee, which will not impact base salaries.

The contract is pending approval by the NMU Board of Trustees.

NMU Offers Friday Shopping Shuttle

Oct. 1, 2018 —
Northern Michigan University has launched a new Friday Shopping Shuttle that transports students to major retailers via Marq-Tran and returns them to several drop-off points on campus. The service began the first week of the fall semester, funded with some of the resources that supported the discontinued Wildcat Shuttle that previously operated Monday-Thursday on campus.

NMU Sets Rural College Example

Northern Michigan University is the featured example in a Chronicle of Higher Education special report titled "Rural Colleges Make the Most of 'Off the Beaten Path' Locations." The article references NMU's ability to draw students by implementing distinctive programs and by using its location and scenery as a marketing tool.
