Deo Discusses U.P. Portrait Collection

One of the exhibition portraits from Deo's collection.

Northern Michigan University alumnus Jack Deo will present an artist's talk pertaining to his collection of photographs featured in the NMU DeVos Art Museum exhibition titled “Standing Still - Studio Portraits from the Upper Peninsula.” The event begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, in Art & Design 165 and will be followed by a reception.

Deo is an award-winning photographer whose work has been featured in various books and magazines. He is also the curator of Superior View Photography. His collection in the exhibit is an amalgam of historic photographs, featuring portraits of local legends, friends, neighbors and everyday heroes of a bygone era—all captured in U.P. photo studios from 1890-1910.

Photographers on display include Charles Cole and Brainard F. Childs of Childs Art Gallery in Marquette and Ishpeming; John William Nara of Nara Studio in Calumet; Gustav A Werner of Werner Studio in Marquette and Ishpeming; and Theodore Sexton of Sexton Studio in Garden.
