NMU Dining launched a new Eco-Bag initiative this semester, providing more than 900 residence hall students with a free bag to reuse at all of its locations. The program was created in response to student concerns about disposable plastic bag waste generated by the increased reliance on takeout meals and snacks during the pandemic.
“Students now have the ability to make a no-cost, environmentally friendly choice every day they dine on campus,” said Paul Schoonveld, director of NMU Dining. “Although we have not seen as much use as we had originally hoped for, we are encouraged by some of the students who continue to carry their Eco-Bags every day. We hope that students continue to do their part and use this great option to reduce waste, and encourage their friends to do the same.”
The initiative aligns with one of the university's core values—environment—and its commitment to sustainability.
NMU Dining partnered with Pepsico, General Mills and Brakebush Chicken to purchase the reusable bags. They can be used when picking up food or snacks from Northern Lights Dining, The Wildcat Den, Fieras, Sundre Snack & Supply Co., Cat Trax convenience store and Temaki & Tea.
“We hope that students will continue to consider using reusable bags in the future when picking up food or snacks at our various locations,” Schoonveld added. “Rather than sending more plastic bags into the landfill, students have a great new bag that they can use again and again for dining or whatever they choose. Things may look different for fall 2021, but we will continue to explore more initiatives like this for the future.”
