Hawn Honored for Excellence in Service

Hawn

Kyle Hawn, a building and grounds attendant at Northern Michigan University, is one of the 2021 Excellence in Service Award recipients.

During the academic year, Spalding Hall was designated as the location where students would go to quarantine or isolate. There was a need for a buildings and grounds attendant to work daily there, which included entering rooms that just housed a COVID-positive student. From day one, Hawn took on this challenge.

“His commitment to our university at a time when we were the most vulnerable and uncertain has been inspiring,” stated his award description. “Kyle has a generous, caring, positive and servanthood spirit. Even a pandemic couldn't extinguish Kyle's commitment and hard work. He has allowed our university to care for our students during a difficult time and has aided in our efforts to remain open for face-to-face instruction.”

During a typical academic year, Hawn can be found cleaning, completing work orders, supervising a student custodial staff, providing building maintenance and being an integral part of the hall community of students

NMU honored several individuals and teams during its virtual 2021 Faculty and Staff Recognition Celebration. Employees were also honored for years-of-service milestones and retirement during the event. See all of those highlighted, along with the award winners, here
