Incoming NMU freshman Thomas Chicka of Foxboro, Wis., recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the Boy Scouts of America's highest honor. He plans to pursue a degree in nursing at Northern, with a music minor.

At Superior High School, Chicka played viola in the concert and chamber orchestras, served as the leader of the Gay-Straight Alliance, participated in Harvard Model United Nations and performed in theater productions.

Chicka was a member of Boy Scout Troop 213 at Concordia Lutheran Church for seven years, according to a Superior Telegram news story. His roles included senior patrol leader and troop guide. He earned 36 merit badges during his time in scouting. For his service project, he worked with the Superior Parks Department to paint more than 50 concrete pillars at Woodstock Bay Landing in Billings Park.

His Eagle Scout Ceremony took place on June 7 at Pattison State Park.
