Newton is NMU Social Work Outstanding Grad

Amanda Newton of Oswego, Ill., has been named the Northern Michigan University Social Work Department 2020-21 outstanding graduating senior. She will earn her bachelor's degree May 1. 

Newton completed her field placement at the Salvation Army of Marquette, while also employed part-time at U.P. Child and Family Services as a supportive visitation worker. She is involved at NORTHIRON Church, where she participates in the Celebrate Recovery program, and has volunteered with children and teens. 

Newton has spent her summers in service as a volunteer/summer intern with Hope House Detroit, Cru Inner City in Detroit and Hamtramck, Mich., and Hesed House in Aurora, Ill. During the 2017-18 school year, she was a Freshman Research Fellow. Upon graduation, Newton plans to continue living in the Marquette area and to practice as a child welfare social worker.

NMU's virtual commencement will be held at 10 a.m. EST Saturday, May 1. Bryan Terrell Clark, a Broadway performer who played George Washington in Hamilton, will be the keynote speaker. Learn more about commencement and access a link to watch it live at www.nmu.edu/commencement.
