NMU Hosts Suicide Prevention Speaker

Woods Bartley

Nationally recognized suicide prevention speaker David Woods Bartley will give a free public presentation titled "Suicide is the Enemy, But Not the Target: How Shifting Our Aim Can Help Change the Outcome" at Northern Michigan University. The event begins at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in Northern Center Ballrooms I and II.

Over the last seven years, Woods Bartley has successfully navigated from the isolation of mental “hellness” to the inclusive space of mental wellness. In addition to giving two TED talks and being named a 2021 Mental Health Champion by the prestigious Steinberg Institute, he has given more than 600 in-person and virtual presentations on suicide prevention and other topics to audiences in the United States, Canada, Central America and India.

His goal is to discuss the issue of mental illness, teach people how to use curiosity to overcome fear and use connection to create hope. Bartley is a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the International Association for Youth Mental Health, the National Storytelling Network's Healing Story Alliance and Active Minds.

The NMU Center for Rural Health and the Superior Health Foundation are co-sponsoring his presentation.
