Northern Michigan University has successfully completed its mid-cycle assurance review by its institutional accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission. NMU met all 18 core components with no required follow-up monitoring. The next steps are to begin work on a quality initiative project, and to prepare for the comprehensive evaluation required to reaffirm accreditation at the end of the current cycle in 2026-27.

NMU participates in the HLC's Open Pathway, one of three options institutions have for maintaining their accreditation. It follows a 10-year cycle and is focused on quality assurance and institutional improvement.

“The four-year assurance review was to assure the HLC that NMU meets all of the core components comprising the five HLC criteria for accreditation,” said Dan Cullen, associate director of accreditation and assessment. “The possible findings are ‘met,' ‘met with concerns' or ‘not met.'

"HLC and the peer reviewers recognizing NMU's high quality and affirming that we meet all standards allows us to focus on the next steps in our accreditation relationship, advancing an institutional improvement project over the next few years.”

Cullen said NMU spent more than a year preparing for and managing the review process. For more information on the university's accreditation, visit https://www.nmu.edu/institutionalresearch/nmu-accreditation.
