Marquette MI – The world-famous Mackinac Island attracts visitors from far and wide, but August 18-20 will have a more Upper Peninsula flair as Northern Michigan University hits the docks for an Arts and Athletics Showcase.
The NMU women's volleyball team returns to the island for the second year to play an exhibition match with Central Michigan University. Last year's match was the first ever collegiate competition on the island. Joining them this year will be the Wildcat women's soccer team who will match up with Northwoods University from Midland.
In addition to the volleyball and soccer matches, students and faculty from NMU's theater and dance program will perform a Broadway Showcase at the Mission Point Resort Theatre on Friday evening and a Wildcat Spotlight Variety Show on Saturday evening.
“Mackinac Island is such a unique place in the Upper Peninsula and for Northern to feature some of our best and brightest there is a great opportunity to celebrate what it means to be a wildcat,” said Bill Digneit, department head for theatre and dance. “Our goal is to welcome visitors, alumni, fans, supporters, families and even future wildcats to the island and share our excitement for all the great things this university does.”
NMU on the Mack is a collective effort of university departments and sponsors. Sponsors include Mission Point Resort, Mackinac Island Arts Council, Double Trouble Entertainment, and Bell's Brewery. Additional events include an Island welcome party, pep rally, Cats on the Mack Amazing Race competition, reception and ends on Sunday with a breakfast boat cruise.
