Root Earns Excellence in Service Award

Clayton Root Jr. is a Northern Michigan University 2021 Excellence in Service Award recipient.

“JR Root is a model building and grounds attendant, always with a smile and ready to work,” stated his award description. “The cleanliness of his assigned area is at an extremely high level and he is always willing to aid building occupants, visitors, students and parents.”

Root is noted for going beyond the required duties of his job by routinely stepping up for special projects. This past year he was a key player in the implementation of the antimicrobial application to the entire campus. He trained staff in other departments on how to use the equipment and was called upon to perform emergency disinfections several times throughout the pandemic.

“JR is always willing to jump in and serve as a first responder in campus building emergencies and has become one of the ‘go-to' members of our staff,” stated his award description. “He leads by example and, because of this, his co-workers and student employees have become skilled in customer service, proud of their work and eager to help in any way.

“JR consistently demonstrates NMU's core values through his dedication to his job, bringing the cleanliness level and safety of our buildings to new heights. His interactions with staff, students, visitors and families make a dynamic impact on our university.”

NMU honored several individuals and teams during its virtual 2021 Faculty and Staff Recognition Celebration. Employees were also honored for years-of-service milestones and retirement during the event. See all of those highlighted, along with the award winners, here
