NMU's School of Health and Human Performance has a new year-round outdoor education center. A 30-foot circular yurt has been installed in a wooded area east of the PEIF.

NMU recently celebrated its first-ever Employee Appreciation Month. Events included the appreciation day kickoff, a retirees breakfast and the annual Faculty and Staff Recognition Celebration, where awards for excellence in service, innovation and distinguished team were presented.

Northern Michigan University's Forest Roberts Theatre has launched its first summer season, which includes the musical Mama Mia!, opening June 20. FRT also has announced the following lineup of performances and special events for the 2019-2020 academic year: 

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will offer a “Traverse City Tour: Villages, Wine and Lavender” from Sunday, July 28-Tuesday, July 30. The registration deadline is July 15.

Northern Michigan University was the most popular choice on Academic Signing Day at Marquette Senior High School. Of the 155 seniors who participated, 91 indicated that they plan to attend NMU in the fall.

The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center proudly announces the Upper Peninsula Folklife Awardees for 2019. Each year since 2009, the Beaumier Center has presented this award to individuals or groups who have made a difference in the creating or preserving the folk traditions of the Upper Peninsula.

Northern Michigan University will offer free public tours of the Phase I renovation of The Northern Center, formerly the University Center. They are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 21. Participants will see the Grand Ballroom and associated integrated technology, including pull-down screens and the projector, along with the new bookstore, pre-function space, service corridor and restrooms.

Todd Rose, a senior communication studies major at Northern Michigan University and Escanaba High School graduate, has been selected as the first recipient of the Dr. Charles F. Ganzert Memorial Fund. The new fund is awarded to a deserving NMU student in honor of Ganzert, who taught broadcasting classes for 23 years before dying suddenly in the spring of 2016. 

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees today approved four new academic programs. Those that will begin with the fall 2019 semester are: certificate in applied workplace leadership; certificate in hospitality and tourism management; bachelor's in social media design management; and master's in mathematics. A master's degree in speech-language pathology will be introduced in summer 2021.

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees presented its annual Student Achievement Awards. Recipients were: Hailey Donohue of Marquette, Outstanding Female Graduating Senior; Michael Stamm of Almont, Mich., Outstanding Male Graduating Senior; Ryan Watling of New London, Wis., Outstanding Student; Connor Loftus of Plainwell, Mich., Outstanding Nontraditional Student; and Kevin Store of Houghton, Outstanding Global Campus Student.
