Tickets are available for Northern Michigan University's "TEDxNMU: Diving Deeper." Twelve speakers will share insights on how they dove headfirst into passions related to their jobs, hobbies or interests, in the hope of inspiring audience members to do the same. The event is scheduled from 1-8 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in Forest Roberts Theatre.
NMU alumni speakers and their topics—in no particular order—are: Keith Glendon, living with joy, meaning and purpose and freeing oneself from the challenges of modern living and societal messages; Kyle Miron, philosophical, spiritual and scientific tools to defeat cancer and destroy disease in our lives; Madison Hampton, building your own path in life with creativity; Morgan Waller, contributing to the community through the importance of networking while searching for that first, big-time job as a college graduate; Jerry Mills, how to ignite the spark in your life to maximize the quality of "kairotic" time and manage the pressures of chronological "quantity" time; and Alex Palzewicz, the social, nutritional and economic case for local food. Local entrepreneur Bugsy Sailor will address the ephemeral qualities of stone skipping.
NMU student presenters are: Olivia Walcott, sustainability that addresses the environment, social justice and economic vitality; Maddie Isch, political discourse and a better way to disagree; Rebecka Miller, knowing your rights as a voter and using your voice at the polls; Ryan Watling, the ethics of storytelling and the role of the listener and teller to foster social sustainability; and Scott Crady, the importance of an authentic voice, mental health challenges and unrealistic standards portrayed by social media.
Student tickets are free and only available in person with an NMU ID at NMU ticket office locations. General admission tickets will be available at the early-bird rate of $40 through Feb. 8, and $45 after that date. Both include all-day access to the conference, refreshments, networking events, breakout sessions and a dinner catered by Simply Superior. "Last year, tickets sold out in about an hour, so we recommend getting them as soon as possible. It would be a shame to miss out on this innovative group of speakers. Our planning committee has been working diligently for five months to make this year’s event bigger and better than 2018. It will be five times larger, with 500 seats and a fully catered dinner for all participants.”
TEDxNMU is a student organization operating under an official license from TED, the umbrella nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or shorter) delivered by today's leading thinkers and doers. TEDx provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world.
