NMU Presents 'Evening with Selma'

Northern Michigan University's Multicultural Education and Resource Center will present “An Evening with Selma” from 7- 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, in 1322 Jamrich Hall. The event includes a screening of the movie Selma, which chronicles Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala. A discussion led by civil rights activist Sheyann Webb-Christburg will follow. The public is invited free of charge.

HR Launches Northern STAR Awards

Northern Michigan University will launch a new employee recognition program at the end of February that allows for more “in the moment” expressions of gratitude from peers and supervisors. The Northern STAR (Simple, Thoughtful Acts of Recognition) Award offers an opportunity to immediately thank and compliment an employee who contributes exemplary work and/or demonstrates a commitment to NMU's core values.

Alumnus 'Unsung Hero' of School Shooting

NMU alumnus Ernest Rospierski (BS 2005) was “an unsung hero" during last year's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, which left 17 dead, according to the chair of a commission investigating the incident. The 37-year-old social studies teacher was grazed by two bullets, then pressed himself against the stairwell door to deny the gunman's attempts to open it while he sent students fleeing toward the nearest exit. 3MT Winners Announced

Northern Michigan University has announced the winners of its 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, an annual competition held at over 600 universities in more than 65 countries that gives graduate students the opportunity to showcase their research.
