Invent@NMU Launches First Kiosk

Oct. 15, 2018 —

Invent@NMU launched its first kiosk Oct. 11 in Gogebic County. The kiosk allows inventors and entrepreneurs to learn about the services offered, submit an idea for a product or business and receive a response from the Invent@NMU team within three business days. It will rotate locations throughout Ironwood, Bessemer and Wakefield.

Nicholas on National Benchmarking Board

Jason Nicholas, director of NMU Institutional Research and Analysis, is on the advisory board for a new national benchmarking project focusing on nonacademic support units at four-year institutions across the country. These units range from financial aid, advisement centers and libraries to dining services, housing and buildings/grounds. The project will analyze their structure, staffing, efficiency and effectiveness. It will also generate data to help drive resource allocation and other decision-making related to support units.

Alumnus Named to Craft Beverage Council

NMU alumnus Richard Anderson ('78 MA) of Thompsonville will represent small distillers on the newly reformed Michigan Craft Beverage Council. He was recently appointed by the governor to a three-year term expiring Sept. 30, 2021. Anderson is the owner and spirits operations officer for Iron Fish Distillery. Some issues the council will address include: awarding grants for research into winemaking, hops, barley, beer and spirits; conducting market surveys and analysis; and offering programs that encourage agricultural elements related to Michigan's craft beverage industries.

NMU Hosts Latin Music and Dancing Event

Northern Michigan University will celebrate Latino heritage by bringing one of Michigan’s top Latin bands, Orquesta Tradición, to campus for a performance in Jamrich Hall on Friday, Oct. 26. The public is invited free of charge. Orquesta Tradición is from the Grand Rapids area. The group plays South American and Caribbean-influenced salsa, merengue, bachata and cumbia music popular throughout Latin America.

NMU Screens 'Phantom of the Opera' Silent Film

Northern Michigan University’s French program is presenting its 11th annual classic silent film with grand piano accompaniment. The Phantom of the Opera, a 1925 horror film with English subtitles starring Lon Chaney in the title role, will be screened at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the Ontario room of the University Center. Admission is free. Pianist Robert Buchkoe will provide the music.
