Police Academy Holds Graduation

Aug. 30, 2018 —
Northern Michigan University’s Regional Police Academy recently held its graduation ceremony. Fourteen recruits were given certificates of completion after 16 weeks of training that revolves around a curriculum set forth by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Foundation Reports Private Giving Increase

The NMU Foundation is pleased to report a 34 percent year-over-year increase in outright gifts, pledges and expectancies for fiscal year 2018 totaling more than $6.3 million. The amount includes funding for an endowed professorship established by Dr. Mark Lovell (’77 BS) and his wife, Eileen. Departments received direct funds totaling about $1.6 million. Combined with FY 2017 gains, private giving has nearly doubled over the past two fiscal years.

NMU Grad Promoted at Brokerage Firm

Zachary Sturdy ('17 BS) has been promoted to financial adviser at Northstar Investment Management in Marquette. He joined Northstar as a research analyst after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in finance from the NMU College of Business. Northstar Investment Management is an independent, full-service brokerage firm with an emphasis on income-producing investment. “We feel very fortunate to have a person as passionate and diligent as Zachary join our investment management team,” said Northstar’s founder, Douglas LaBar.

Construction Management Featured in Magazine

NMU's construction management program is featured in a University Businessmagazine article titled "Campus construction instruction: Turning campus building sites into student learning labs." NMU students worked on The Woods housing complex. They participated in site tours and meetings and reviewed blueprints and other project documents. Alumnus Named Sports Editor

NMU alumnus Rich Palzewic ('95 BS) is the new sports editor of The Press, which covers high school and college sporting events in Ashwaubenon, Howard-Suamico and De Pere, Wis. The U.P. native and Stephenson High School graduate earned his NMU degree in elementary education. He taught English in Rhinelander for several years before a 2007 move to Green Bay, where he became the main sports freelancer for the Green Bay Gamblers and St. Norbert College. Palzewic joined The Press staff in August 2015.

NMU Rolling Out New Mobile App

A new Northern Michigan University mobile app with expanded functional options will be available for download from the App Store for iOS devices and Google Play for Android devices beginning Monday, Aug. 27. Users can filter relevant content by selecting one of three personas: student; alumni; or community member.
