Food 4 Fines Returns to NMU

NMU Dedicates Shimadzu Laboratory

Northern Michigan University held a dedication earlier this afternoon for its new Shimadzu Analytical Core Laboratory for Medicinal Plant Sciences, which opened this fall. Undergraduate students in the rigorous chemistry program have rare access to cutting-edge instrumentation and technology applicable to numerous career options in and beyond the burgeoning cannabis industry.

New Life for an Old Ore Dock

Art Museum Receives MCACA Grant

For the second straight year, Northern Michigan University's DeVos Art Museum has received a grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. The 2020 award of about $14,200 will allow the museum to expand programming, promote exhibitions and bring guest speakers and curators to campus.

Filmmaker Screens, Discusses Documentary

Island Experience Inspires Writers

English graduate students and faculty members from Northern Michigan University delved into environmental fiction and ecocriticism during a stay on Granite Island Oct. 18-20, surrounded by the grandeur and moods of Lake Superior. NMU is the only public university in the nation to offer a course held in a lighthouse.

Model Simulates Volcanic Eruptions

A volcano erupted twice, spewing “lava” water vertically into the air, during a demonstration on a Northern Michigan University parking lot. Because it is difficult to predict volcanic eruptions, much less study them from a safe distance, assistant professor Hans Lechner used an analog model to create an attention-grabbing simulation of the effect for his physical geography class on Wednesday.

Students Attend PRSSA International Conference

Thirteen NMU students traveled to San Diego Oct. 18-22 for the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) International Conference. They attended presentations by keynote speakers, workshops and breakout sessions, and networked with fellow pre-professionals as well as practitioners in the field.

NMU Hosts Cannabis Science Panel

Representatives of companies on the cutting edge of Michigan's evolving cannabis industry will discuss careers, innovations and trends during a panel presentation at Northern Michigan University. The free event is scheduled from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in Reynolds Recital Hall.
