In celebration of its 10th year, Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) awarded a $10,000 grant to Northern Michigan University in support of college access and postsecondary attainment. This grant is one of 10 grants MCAN is awarding in a 10-day period in connection with its 10th year as part of its “10-10-10 Birthday Tour.”

According to a press release, MCAN has helped Michigan's postsecondary attainment rate increase for the 10th consecutive year, from 35.6% to 45.5%.

Members of the MCAN team visited NMU leaders to present a $10,000 ceremonial check.

NMU promotes an active environment to foster strong minds and bodies, inspires innovation and inclusion through community engagement, and develops leaders capable of local and global impact. Its strives to be an inclusive community where differences are recognized as assets of the institution, respected attributes of the person, and a valuable part of the university experience.

“When students are looking for an affordable, quality education, Northern Michigan University (NMU) has continually shown it is a great option," stated the release. "They work incredibly hard to get students in the door, keep them there and help them complete their degree. NMU is consistently an underrated institution due almost entirely to its geography, yet they have always known that their geography is an incredible strength. We don't underestimate them at MCAN and you shouldn't, either.”

MCAN works to improve the futures of Michigan's students and communities by making college accessible to all. MCAN's work centers on one main goal: to increase Michigan's postsecondary educational attainment rate to 60% by 2030. MCAN engages partners statewide who are committed to systems-level change and the reduction of barriers to increase college readiness, participation and completion rates, particularly among low-income students, first-generation college-going students, and students of color.
