NMU Collaborative Project Receives NAFSCE Grant

Feb. 16, 2023 —
Northern Michigan University Education Professor Kristen White is among collaborators from 10 partner universities and K12s—including Marquette Area Public Schools—to receive an award from the National Association for Family, School and Community Engagement (NAFSCE) to participate in its Family Engagement Educator Preparation Innovation Project. Only nine collaboratives were selected from a nationwide pool of 76 proposals to receive grants totaling more than $150,000. 

NMU's SISU Institute and Innovate Marquette Host Innovation Week

Feb. 16, 2023 —
SISU: The Innovation Institute at Northern Michigan University and Innovate Marquette are partnering to present their inaugural Innovation Week, a professional development conference bringing together thought leaders and creative minds in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Registration is now open for the event, which will be held May 8-10 at NMU's Forest Roberts Theatre. The schedule features keynote speakers from Trend Hunter and Virginia Commonwealth University, interactive workshops, innovation quests with curated tours of various U.P. industry sectors, and networking opportunities.

NMU Volunteers Power Sled Dog Races

Feb. 13, 2023 —
The UP200 sled dog race, established in 1990, is powered by Northern Michigan University, both in terms of sponsorship and volunteer support. Darlene Walch, president of the U.P. Sled Dog Association, estimates as many as 500 students will volunteer for this weekend's UP200 Powered by Northern Michigan University, Jack Pine 30 and Midnight Run. They help with everything from selling merchandise to vet checks for the dogs and crowd control, with several student organizations involved in the process.

Pre-Vet Club Assists with Sled Dogs

Feb. 13, 2023 —
Northern Michigan University's Pre-Vet Club continues to play an important role in three sled dog races taking place this weekend: the UP200 Powered by NMU, Jack Pine 30 and Midnight Run. Eight to 12 members from the club are expected to be volunteering at the events, helping the veterinarians to make sure the dogs' hearts and lungs are good for the journey, as well as checking on the condition of their paw pads, muscles and joints.

Feb. 9, 2023 —
Beginning this year, the sled dog race that starts and finishes in Marquette and serves as an Iditarod qualifier is officially known as the “UP200 Powered by NMU.” As a Gold Sled Sponsor, Northern Michigan University is planning more activities around the event, which will be held on Friday, Feb. 17. Its partnership with the U.P. Sled Dog Association also enhances volunteer and service-learning opportunities for students, faculty and staff, and elevates the race's branding and marketing efforts.

Black History Month Events at NMU

Feb. 3, 2023 —
Northern Michigan University's Black Student Union is celebrating Black History Month with several events in February. They include a Black History 101 Mobile Museum making a stop at Jamrich Hall, a comedy show featuring comedians who have appeared on network television programs, film screenings and a Black Love Day bake sale. All events are free, unless otherwise noted.

NMU Offers Dual Enrollment Course in Education

Jan. 18, 2023 —
Beginning this semester, Northern Michigan University is partnering with Bark River-Harris (BR-H) High School to offer NMU's first dual enrollment course in the field of education. Sixteen students from BR-H and three to five students from Nah Tah Wahsh Public School Academy are participating in the course, Schooling in America. The goals are to give students the opportunity to gain college credits while in high school, and to potentially interest them in pursuing a career in education.

Outdoor Rec Innovation Partners Receive USDA Grant

Northern Michigan University is among four project partners awarded a $700,000 Rural Innovation Stronger Economy (RISE) grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to support the creation and management of the Marquette Outdoor Venture (MOV) Innovation Center. The funding was awarded to Innovate Marquette SmartZone, along with partners NMU, Lake Superior Community Partnership, and Michigan Works!

Rural Health Essay Contest Winners Announced

The Northern Michigan University Center for Rural Health has announced the winners of its annual essay competition for U.P. high school seniors to coincide with National Rural Health Day. This year's contest was sponsored by the Literacy Legacy Fund of Michigan and the Michigan Center for Rural Health. The top three prizes in each U.P. region—east, central and west—were $500, $250 and $100.
