Nadine Strossen, past president of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), will present “Free Speech and the Crisis of Higher Education: a Conversation with Nadine Strossen” at Northern Michigan University. The event is scheduled from 1-2:40 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in 1320 John X. Jamrich Hall.

Former Northern Michigan University President James Appleberry passed away Monday in Louisville, Ky., from complications of pancreatic cancer. He was 86. He began his NMU tenure in July 1983 and resigned in 1991 to become president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), which had previously recognized NMU under his leadership as “one of the top 10 institutions for innovation and change in American higher education.”

Former Northern Michigan University President and 1973 NMU alumna Kerri Schuiling is one of two recipients of the 2024 Dorothea M. Lang Pioneer Award—the most prestigious honor presented by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) Foundation. The award is named for the late past president of the ACNM and ACNM Foundation, who advanced the profession in countless ways for decades. It recognizes exceptional individuals in the field who have exhibited vision, leadership and innovation.

Northern Michigan University's construction management program is hosting Women in Construction Day on Friday, Nov. 1 in the Jacobetti Complex. This hands-on career exploration event will be presented by dynamic women working in the industry and offer high school students an opportunity to discover options traditionally viewed as male-oriented.

Indigenous artists from across the region will gather at Northern Michigan University to share their perspectives on film, paintings, music, sculpture, literature and other arts.  The inaugural Indigenous Perspectives Symposium is free to the public and scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1, in the Northern Center.

The Zodiac Trio, a premier violin-clarinet-piano ensemble, will perform as part of Northern Michigan University's Siril Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, in Reynolds Recital Hall. The group will also host two free events earlier in the day, also in Reynolds: a music appreciation presentation at 11 a.m.; and a masterclass at 1 p.m.

The Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Asexual College Conference (MBLGTACC) will be held at Northern Michigan University Oct. 25-27. Now in its 32nd year, it is the nation's largest and oldest-continuously running conference for queer and trans+ college students and young adults, designed to catalyze conversation and action around relevant issues. Each year, MBLGTACC makes one Midwest community a destination for a diverse gathering of 2,000+ college students.

Northern Michigan University will hold the fourth annual Upper Peninsula Association for Behavior Analysis (UPABA) conference Nov. 7-8. This year's event focuses on language acquisition strategies and features national speakers, practical workshops and networking opportunities. The goals of the annual conference are to increase knowledge, improve client support and collaborate with institutions for effective care across the Great Lakes region.

For more than two centuries, Mary Shelley's 1818 Gothic novel Frankenstein has remained a favorite within the horror fiction genre. Its tale of a scientist's effort to bring back the dead by carving a new creature from their corpses—only to have his creation turn on him through a series of violent acts—has had an enduring influence on popular culture and spawned many creative adaptations. Northern Michigan University Theatre and Dance will premiere its version of the stage play, with opening night appropriately on Halloween.
