Pakistani Exchange Student Enjoying NMU

Nov. 9, 2018 —

The International Education Services Office at NMU is collaborating with World Learning to bring students from other nations to campus for cultural exchange and opportunities to learn at American institutions. Ahmad is one student attending NMU this fall through the Global UGRAD Pakistan Program (IREX), which enables youth leaders from underserved populations across Pakistan to have opportunities to study abroad. He was selected for the program by his alma mater back home.

Reflecting on WWI Impact on NMU

Veterans Day on Nov. 11 coincides with the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Under the leadership of President James Kaye, Northern State Normal School (now Northern Michigan University) participated in WWI regionally, nationally and abroad. War-time concerns were exacerbated by another significant threat a century ago: a Spanish flu pandemic that ultimately shut down Northern for three months in the fall 1918 semester.

NCLL Offers Wine Program

Nov. 8, 2018 —

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present “A Proper Wine for the Occasion” from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the Zephyr. The registration deadline is Friday, Nov. 30. 

Participants will learn to identify wine characteristics and determine individual taste preferences. The information will cover the history, origin and common characteristics of wine. The program includes four wine samples and assorted crackers to cleanse the palate.

NCLL Addresses Traveling Solo with Grandkids

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present “Traveling Solo with Grandchildren” from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3. The registration deadline is Monday, Nov. 26. Traveling grandmas will present tips and tricks on setting expectations, planning and flexibility while describing their own experiences and trips to Washington D.C., Quebec and Maritime Canada with school-age children.

The cost is $3 for NCLL members and $6 for non-members. To register, call 227-2979. For more information, contact event liaison Darlene Arseneau at 486-9861.

Alumnus Joins UPHS-Marquette

NMU alumnus and podiatrist Dr. Brad Benson ('10) has returned to his hometown to join UP Health System-Marquette. He said his training has provided him with a diverse background in all foot and ankle problems, but one of his passions is limb salvage, especially in the diabetic cohort. Benson went to medical school at Kent State University and served as a podiatric medicine and surgery resident at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. After completing his residency, Benson decided to move back to Marquette.

NMU Screens 'Trudell'

Nov. 8, 2018 —

Northern Michigan University’s Native American Student Association will screen the documentary Trudell at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in the Whitman Hall commons. The event is free and open to the public.

The documentary traces American Indian activist and poet John Trudell's life, from his childhood in Omaha, Neb., through his role as a leader of the American Indian Movement and his rebirth as a musician and spoken word poet.

NCLL Hosts Lambeau Field Trip

Please note the Nov. 16 registration deadline. 

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will offer a guided, behind-the-scenes ‘Legendary Tour’ of Lambeau Field and the Packers Hall of Fame, along with a visit to the Botanical "Garden of Lights" on Friday, Dec. 14. The registration deadline is Friday, Nov. 16. The bus tour will leave Marquette at 7:30 a.m. and return at about midnight.

NMU Students Attend PRSSA Conference

Eleven Northern Michigan University students attended the annual Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) National Conference marking the 50th anniversary of the organization. The group traveled to Austin, Texas, and attended several workshops and sessions with internationally renowned speakers. Presenters included Robert Reich, former U.S. Secretary of Labor, and Jonathan Mildenhall, former vice president of marketing at the Coca-Cola Corporation and chief marketing officer for Airbnb who now owns his own firm, Twenty First Century Brand.

NCLL Offers Digital Photography Classes

Please note the Nov. 20 registration deadline.

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present “More than Beginning Photography” classes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: Nov. 28, Jan. 23 and Feb. 27. The registration deadline is Tuesday, Nov. 20.  Participants are welcome to attend one or all courses.

This course continues the use of digital camera photographic techniques and composition. Classroom assignments, in-class critiques and hands-on activities will be included.
