Northern Michigan University alumnus Jon Mommaerts of Marquette said “it was outside of the classroom where I learned everything that made me who I am today.” It seems an appropriate sentiment from someone who has enhanced the area's outdoor silent sports culture by helping to establish a renowned trail network and world-class skiing and biking events.

The Two Books Two Communities program has organized October community events in Marquette and Munising that revolve around this year's Great Lakes-themed selections The Living Great Lakes by Jerry Dennis and Harborless, a collection of poems by Cindy Hunter Morgan.
The Northern Michigan University chapter of Active Minds, a national mental health advocacy organization, is bringing a touring exhibit titled “Send Silence Packing” to campus Monday, Sept. 30. The exhibit features 1,100 backpacks to represent the approximate number of undergraduate students in the country who commit suicide each year.
NMU's inaugural Green & Gold Gala far exceeded its fundraising goal for the endowed Flexible Aid Fund and drew about 475 attendees. The fund assists students facing unanticipated expenses that threaten their education. It grew from $50,000 before the event to $200,000 by the end of the night through sponsorships, ticket sales and private gifts from donors.
The Northern Michigan University Music Department presents the next concert in the faculty chamber music program at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 in Reynolds Recital Hall. This piano and strings performance will feature NMU faculty Barbara Rhyneer on violin and Nancy Zimmerman on piano, along with local cellist Anne Perket.
